I bought a Comet Sweeper to try and have a Hot-Short-Board-Summer(™) and finally have a set-up dedicated fully to Downhill, and a set-up dedicated fully to freeride. I had been doing both disciplines during the 2025 season with the Pantheon Athena, and would go in between by changing the trucks. I would use the Zealous V1 Trucks for DH, and the Skoa Zephyrs with either a 47/42 or a 47/26 split for freeride, or fast freeride, respectively. The idea for this summer is to have a board as a platform to experiment with the new technologies that have come to the scene and I haven't really tried yet, like: torque blocks, toe stops and toe risers. This platform will be a modified Sweeper and I will be 3D printing all these add-ons to make it a modern downhill set-up.
The first step is to pull the Sweeper into CAD. Conveniently, Comet provided a picture on its website that has the outline of the Sweeper and its dimensions. I brought that over to SolidWorks and made a simple model of the board. It's important to remark that the model is flat, while the actual board has concave and rocker, however, this approximation should be more than enough for the first modifications that I want to do. The other intricate curves might be important later on, when I'm designing some of the add-ons that will go on the top, and I might have to use other techniques to bring the right shape into CAD when I get there.
I'm not a fan of the original Sweeper nose and tail shape, though I really like the reverse taper. The amount of time I have spent looking at nose and tails of modern downhill/ race boards can only be described as unhealthy. There are a few elements I would like for my personalized downhill deck: preserve the reverse taper or minimize the reverse taper decrease, have a longer nose than tail, have a more aggressive/ pointier nose, and reduce some of the material in the tail with a fun shape, but preserving enough standing platform. I'm experimenting in CAD with a few different nose and shapes that are inspired from a few of my favorite looking boards. We have the following boards inspiration from left to right: Zenit Stinger, Shangang CR-1500 and Pantheon Mitch Pro.
I noticed that the flush mounts and the mounting holes of my 2026 Sweeper are a little different from the reference picture. I have more mounting options in reality, so I adjusted the model. Although I love the interesting tail shape of the CR-1500 and the super aggressive nose of the Stinger, they couldn't beat the elegance of the Mitch Pro, so I grabbed that as inspiration and adjusted to mesh perfectly with the original Sweeper contour.
Leveraging the precision of my 3D printer, I printed in PETG guides that attach to the trucks mounting holes, This allowed me to feel out the shape on top of the real skateboard before committing. I'm not used to skating narrow wheelbases, the shortest I've gone (measuring from the inner bolts) is 20.5". So being able to visualize in real life with guides was a great way to make sure I can move my front truck up a little and still have enough of a standing platform. I'm designing around a 19.5" wheelbase.
The 3D printed guides were also how I marked the shape before cutting. I went at it with a cordless jig saw and followed on the outside of my pencil marks, as I would later on sand it down to the perfect shape. After cutting to shape I re-attached the 3D printed guides and using a 4" x 36" belt sander, I sanded down the shape to meet exactly at the guide. It was very easy to follow the guide as the contrast between the light maple color and the black 3D print made it very easy to see what I was doing. After sanding was done and the outline was pretty good, I noticed that the chamber was all over the place, as keeping a constant angle free handing the board on top of the belt was a bit of a challenge. So using the 6" disc sander attached to the belt sander, I set the work table to 18 degrees and gave the edge a constant chamfer. This made the final result go from acceptable, to looking like a production board. I cannot stress enough how big of a difference it made and it will be something I will make sure to do in any future board projects.
After I was happy with the shape of the board I knew I wanted to change the color to something faster than purple. Using an orbital sander I removed the original clear coat from the board and most of the color. I needed to be careful to not remove too much material around the routed Comet logo and the Sweeper letters, as I was going to tape those up before spray painting. The technique was to add tape above it and then with a flat screw driver mark the outline of the logo and letters. This was a simple 2.5 hour operation, probably harder and way more tedious than cutting the board to be honest, but it was well worth it. Before painting, I used a lightly damped towel in isopropyl alcohol to remove any remaining dust particles from the bottom of the board and waited a few minutes to let the alcohol fully evaporate. For finishing, I bought a can of Rust-Oleum Graphite Grey spray paint, and a can of Dupli-Color 1K Clear Extreme Matte. I applied 4 light coats of grey, waiting around 5-10 minutes in between coats. I then waited 36 hours before applying two light coats of the Dupli-Color Clear. Although I wish the grey was a little darker, the matte clear coat gave it a very nice finish. I'm quite happy with the results.
I 3D printed in 95A Overtune TPU the Happy Board Co freeride footstop and a regular footed torque block. As I said before, I have never skated a torque block before, so I followed the recommendation and mounted it with velcro. My current set-up is the following:
Trucks: Zelous V1 with stock Venom bushings
Board: Comet Sleeper with a 19.5 WB (22.5 axle to axle)
Wheels: Green Power Peralta Kevin Reimers are still my baseline wheel, adjust depending on the spot
Bearings: Zealous bearings
Griptape: a combination of Lokton, old Vicious and who knows.

I'm starting to enjoy skipping some laps, and get a well deserved rest in, to take some pictures during Downhill events. Here's the album for the 2025 Rollin' in the Res, which took place in the Hoopa Valley in California. Absolutely stunning place.

Skipped some laps during the freeride to take some photos. All photos taken with a Fuji X-1A body and a Canon FDX 70mm lens with a Fuji body adapter.
